November: Marty Schlosser Presents Joseph Walsh

Once again, Marty Schlosser drove up from Kingston to deliver a mesmerizing presentation of his tour of Joseph Walsh's workshop, installations, and methods.  You may take a look at Mr. Walsh's web site if you need a reminder or want to kick yourself for missing November's meeting.  The Ottawa Woodworkers Association is through and through grateful for Marty's generous sharing in the form of his feature presentations.

2018-19 Season Launch: 11 September 2018

Are you geared up for the 2018-19 season of meetings of the OWA?  Has the finish properly hardened on your summer opus for Show and Tell?  No problem if you need an extra week, since our first meeting for 2018-19 will be on the .S.E.C.O.N.D. Tuesday in September, the 11th.  We move back to first Tuesdays in October. Meetings run from 7 to 9 PM, and doors usually open at 6:30 if you'd like to help set up.  We meet at the Western intersection of Baseline and Centrepointe, in the basement of the Bethany Baptist Church.

Rust Junkie Recap

Another very successful Great Canadian Rust Junkie Fest was held at the Wadkin Temple (AKA Jack Forsburg's place).  Jack once again ordered perfect weather for the sixth annual event with well over 100 people in attendance.  There was a good number of OWA members both presenting and taking in all the activities.  Some of the familiar OWA faces such as Vic Tesolin (dove tail marker made with hand tools), Karen McBride (molding a Wadkin badge), James Ferris (spoon carving), Nick Verbree (blacksmith forging) and of course the High Priest himself Jack Forsburg (machine made joinery) putting on demonstrations through the afternoon.  Other demonstrators Brent Stanley (timber framing) and Serge LevesQue (motor and switch wiring).  A good number of vendors had items for sale from stone sinks to power tools, hand tools, wood, and more. Once again OWA member Ken Dixon dusted off his shop apron and worked the grill, with much appreciated help from Rob Suarez, to feed the hungry lunch-time …

February: Half-Blind Dovetails with Gary Devries

Feb's first Tuesday falls on the 5th.  Something good on TV that night?  Watch it on Netflix or have a friend record it.  Why?  Because Gary Devries is going to demonstrate the cutting of half-blind dovetails for drawer fronts and the subsequent fitting of drawer fronts into casework. Maybe we will learn the secrets of how Gary accomplishes in a two hour meeting what takes some of us two days to do. As always we meet from 7 to 9 PM in the basement of the Bethany Baptist Church, at the intersection of Baseline and Centrepointe, the West one as Centerpointe meets Baseline twice.  Come as early as 6:30 if you would like to help set up chairs.  And bring your dry indoor footwear. The Ottawa Woodworkers Association welcomes new members.  Just show up and register at the desk.  You may attend two meetings at no cost before deciding whether you'd like to join.
